“The latest GLM imagery (1301Z) does suggest that the boom was a result of a meteor,” the agency said.

Further analysis from weather specialists suggested the meteor likely broke apart in multiple stages. Scott Rudloski, a lightning specialist with the weather service, said the data indicated two distinct bursts as the object disintegrated in the atmosphere.

Multi-state impact footprint

Eyewitness reports poured in from across multiple states. The American Meteor Society recorded around 140 reports from people across at least 10 states, including Illinois, Kentucky, and New York, as well as parts of Canada.

Videos captured by National Weather Service staff and local cameras showed a bright streak cutting across the sky, followed by a flash. In some areas, the shockwave was strong enough to shake buildings and trigger concerns about explosions.

Local officials and astronomers noted that while such fireball events are not unheard of, the intensity of this one made it unusual for the region.

“We’ve had no actual reports yet that anything hit the ground, so it could have mostly burned up as it entered the atmosphere,” said Brian Mitchell of the National Weather Service’s Cleveland office, as reported by Cleveland Magazine.

NASA officials said some fragments may have survived the descent and could have landed in parts of southern Medina County, though no confirmed recoveries have been reported.
